"Fire shall be kept burning on the altar continually; it shall not go out."  Lev 6:13 Web
 
"Fire came out from before Yahweh, and consumed the burnt offering . . . When all the people saw it, they shouted, and fell on their faces." (Lev 9:24 )
 
"David built an altar to Yahweh there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called on Yahweh; and he answered him from the sky by fire on the altar. . . "  (1 Chron 21:26 )
 
" At the time of the evening offering, Elijah the prophet came near and said . . . Yahweh, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel . . . Then Yahweh's fire fell, and consumed the burnt offering, the wood, the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench."  (1 Kg 18:36-38 )
 
The fire on the altar came directly from God and was the presence of God Himself.  It was the same appearance of God as in the burning bush when God appeared to Moses (Ex 3:2); the presence of God as he led his people through the desert in a pillar of fire (Ex 13:21-22); and the appearance of God as he descended on Mount Sinai in fire (Ex 19:11). Our God is a consuming fire! (Heb 12:29)  This was no ordinary, earthly fire, it was the presence of the Lord God!  God intended to dwell continuously among his people, therefore, the fire was never to go out.  
 
The Christian church experiences the presence of God through his Holy Spirit - we have been baptized in Fire!  (Lk 3:16 "He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire."  )
